Nearly 3,000 children are currently suffering from the separation of their migrant parents at the U.S.-Mexico borders, even people seeking asylum, due to President Donald Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy. During the month of April, the “zero-tolerance” policy was introduced, which meant the Justice Department will be prosecuting every immigrant who arrives with their children and will be sent to jail. The policy is enforced to discourage people to come to this country.
Trump believes that the immigrants arriving to America could be murderers and thieves. He claims he wants the country safe, which starts at the borders. However, these children are suffering in the facilities that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is sending them to.
Pediatricians who have visited these facilities have said that the area is not terrible, but the children are crying hysterically and calling out for their parents.
The American Academy of Pediatrics even warn that highly stressful experiences, including family separation, can cause irreparable harm to lifelong development by disrupting a child’s brain architecture. It causes stress, and can cause heart disease, depression and these children being traumatized.
Childhood is a crucial part of a person because that’s when they are getting molded into the person they will later on become. Growing up knowing they were once separated from their parents can follow these children and be seen in the relationships they hold, their own mental health and feelings of abandonment.
Children aren’t the only ones being negatively affected by these separations. Marco Antonio Muñoz, who was sent to jail and separated from his 3-year-old son, committed suicide in his cell. Policies like “zero tolerance” are consuming people negatively and making them suffer.
Families from Honduras, El Salvador and other countries are trying to flee their homes because of the violence that is occurring there. For these parents, their children are their first priority. Their wish is to keep them out of what their country mostly offers, such as gangs, violence, drugs and poverty. These families are coming here to start fresh and just want to live some form of the American dream where their children can get a better education than what they were offered in their own country.
Most Americans think immigrants just come here to steal jobs, but they do the jobs no one else wants to do. Immigrants become janitors, maids, gardeners, gutter cleaners, etc. Most people think immigrants are criminals, but most stay away from crime out of fear of getting arrested and deported back to their country. They are careful to not even get a speeding ticket. Immigrants aren’t bad people and just want to live a better life. Not just for them, but for their families as well.
Most immigrants who do come to America and get a job send their money to their families back home. If Trump and his administration don’t want immigrants in this country, they could help other countries create jobs by spreading American companies globally.
Trump today is trying to reverse his wrong-doings with the policy to keep families together again. He signed an order to “solve the problem.” The order won’t stop holding children in detention centers or charging people who come in illegally with misdemeanors, but at least give the children a chance to be detained with their parents.

Los inmigrantes no son malas personas y solo quieren vivir una vida mejor no solo para ellos, sino también para sus propias familias.
La mayoría de los inmigrantes que llegan a Estados Unidos y obtienen un trabajo envían dinero a sus familias en su país de origen. Si Trump y su administración no quieren inmigrantes en este país, podrían ayudar a los otros países a crear empleos, como la expansión de las empresas estadounidenses a nivel mundial.
Trump hoy está tratando de revertir sus malas acciones con la política de mantener a las familias unidas nuevamente. Él firmó una orden para “resolver el problema.” La orden no dejará de retener a los niños en centros de detención ni de acusar a las personas que ingresen ilegalmente de delitos menores, pero al menos les dará a los niños la oportunidad de ser detenidos con sus padres.
