Montclair State University Alumna Sabrina Robinson Takes On Professional Baseball

Women’s sports have surged over the last couple of years, and all signs point to even more momentum on the way. For Sabrina Robinson, a Montclair State University alumna, she gets to be a part of the growth in women’s sports with a new league: the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL).

Robinson lives in Brooklyn, New York, and has always had a strong passion for baseball. She was the founder of the Montclair State Club Baseball team, which she started during her time as a student.

“I started club baseball with the help of an organization called Baseball For All, which has the goal of starting women’s club baseball programs across the country,” said Robinson.

The WPBL was officially established in 2024, with the inaugural four teams — New York, Boston, San Francisco,= and Los Angeles, were announced to the public in October 2025. The draft for the league’s first season was conducted virtually in November.

Robinson was selected 60th overall by WPBL Boston in the third round. She explained how the tryout process leading up to the draft was difficult.

Sabrina Robinson was drafted by Boston in Round 3, Pick 20 of the Women's Pro Baseball League in November of 2025.

“The tryouts were in August of 2025, and there were about 600 women there,” said Robinson. “About 120 of those women went on to be drafted by the league.”

Although baseball was always a passion for Robinson, she played nearly every other sport imaginable. Cheerleading, soccer, swimming, softball, and ice hockey are just some that she once took part in.

In high school, Robinson tried to play baseball on the boys’ team. When she was eventually cut, the softball coach called her to join the team, where she spent the next four years

Right before Robinson came to Montclair State, she faced a major athletic setback — a torn ACL. She joined the diving team at Montclair State and the women’s ice hockey team in the meantime before starting the baseball program. When the program started, it was a difficult adjustment process for some of the players.

“Pitching to reach 60 feet was very hard to teach people in the first few months,” Robinson explained. “Especially for those who come from softball, where the field is much smaller.”

The inaugural season of WPBL will take place in Springfield, Illinois. It runs for seven weeks, from August until the middle of September. The games will be livestreamed on YouTube for this upcoming season.

“I’m really excited to visit Springfield, since I’ve never been,” said Robinson. “It is the same location where the original league was played in the 1940s, so it should be cool.”

The excitement around a new professional league for women’s sports is not something Robinson thought would happen, but she explained what it meant for the future of the sport.

“I’m really excited to pave a path for girls in the baseball community, because when I turned 18, there weren’t a lot of opportunities,” said Robinson. “Women’s baseball is really exciting, and it’s great to see that women don’t have to fight to play on the baseball field anymore.”

With a lot of experience as a leader at the collegiate level at Montclair State University, Robinson has now moved on to the next chapter of her life. She looks to take on the WPBL and continue to inspire women.
