After Kylie Jenner stole the spotlight for weeks over what she says was her “highly lined lips,” the reality star saw an opportunity to make a quick buck (or million) by coming out with her makeup line, Kylie Cosmetics. Nearly five months after her initial release date, she has eight lip kits (each coming with a lip liner and matte lipstick), and a new line of lip glosses, which debuted two weeks ago. This review is strictly for her lip kits.
Surprisingly, the prices are relatively cheap, with the lip kits retailing for $29 and the glosses for a mere $15. However, even five months after the line was announced, it continues to be a struggle for many to access these products, considering they have sold out within 20 minutes during each restock. As a result, the ones who claim these products end up selling them for inflated prices on selling platforms like eBay.
As an avid makeup collector, I have been able to find the formula to knowing when every restock happens. If you are not a huge Jenner fan, but still want the lip kits and glosses, the only way to be informed is to follow Jenner and Kylie Cosmetics religiously across every social media platform possible. This includes Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Jenner’s application. It is annoying to check every day on nearly every platform, because sometimes she does not post the information on each individual outlet.
As for ordering the product once it’s available, some say you can compare it to a virtual Black Friday opening. Nearly half the restocks result in the website crashing in a matter of minutes because of the overflow of traffic, sometimes surpassing 250,000 people. All you can do is keep refreshing. The crash can last anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes.
Do you just opt to buy the products for inflated prices to avoid the frustration, try to get it during a hectic restock on the website, or pass on it completely? In order to help you make a decision, I am going to provide pictures individually modeling each of the eight lip kits shades, as well give a review on the product and give my suggestion.
Shade #1
This is called “22,” which is named after Jenner’s lucky number. The color is a reddish-orange and is perfect for the spring, summer and fall seasons.
Shade #2
This is called “Kourt K,” obviously named after Jenner’s stepsister, Kourtney Kardashian. The color is a deep purple and is perfect for a night out on the town.
Shade #3
“Posie K” was named after the winner in a fan contest, where Instagram users suggested a name for this shade. The color is the pinkest out of all of the shades and is perfect for a day look.
Shade #4
“Candy K” is named after Jenner’s childhood nickname. This is a perfect neutral color for any season and any time of the day.
Shade #5
“Dolce K” was inspired by one of Jenner’s childhood pets, a dog you may remember from the early days of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Unlike “Candy K,” this product has a stronger brownish color.
Shade #6
“KoKo K” is named after Jenner’s closest stepsister, Khloe Kardashian. This is my favorite shade so far in the entire collection, because it literally looks like you have nothing on your lips at all. It just makes your lips a tiny bit more pink.
Shade #7
The shade “True Brown K” was inspired by Jenner’s makeup artist, Joyce Bonelli, who introduced her to the concept of dark brown lipstick. It resembles the color of chocolate. Personally, this is my least favorite, as it is hard to find practical uses to use it.
Shade #8
“Mary Jo K” is named after Jenner’s grandmother. This is by far the most electric color in the collection thus far and is perfect to make a statement or to wear on a girls night out.
Here are all of the shades next to each other so you can see the slight differences between some of the shades.
Overall, I would rate this product an 8/10, but would only suggest purchasing via the official website so you don’t get ripped off. I could live without these, but they are nice to have when you are looking for something to spice up your look in a quick two minutes. The lip applicator isn’t the best because it isn’t that fluffy, so depending on the shade, it can come off looking like it has a streaking look. However, recently she has revised it so it looks better upon application.
Perhaps the best part of the product is that it has extremely long wear — you could wear it for 8+ hours and there would be very little fading. The biggest negative about the whole experience is if you are lucky enough to get one of these products via the website, it takes about 10-14 days to get your package despite their claims.
