Kaitlyn Struss scored two goals and moved into third place on the Red Hawks field hockey all-time scoring list as Montclair State beat Misericordia University 4-0 at Sprague Field on Sept. 10.
Struss netted both goals in a span of 10 minutes during the second half. Senior midfielder Camille Maimone set up Struss’s first goal just over 40 minutes into the game with an assist from a penalty corner. Struss scored her second goal about 10 minutes later, this time assisted by senior midfielder Megan Roeloffs, giving her six goals for the season.
Sophomore forward Amber Haslett and freshman forward Hannah Bollinger each scored a goal during the shutout. Bollinger scored her second goal of the season off a scramble on the front-right side of the goal 15 minutes into the game.
As the Red Hawks continued to dominate, Haslett scored off a rebound on the right side of the goal before the end of the first half. The sophomore now leads the team with eight goals this season.
The Misericordia Cougars sent only one shot on goal during the entire outing at Sprague Field, ending the night out-shot by the Red Hawks 25-1. The Cougars dipped to a record of 1-4 while Montclair State advanced to 5-0.
The Red Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 for a match up with in-state rival Stevens Institute of Technology (3-1) at 7 p.m. at Sprague Field. Montclair State will go on a four-game road trip after their game against Stevens, and then they’ll play their first New Jersey Athletic Conference game of 2016 against Stockton University at home on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
