When Billy Tigar steps to the plate right now, something good is almost guaranteed to happen.
As the baseball season moves into its most important stretch, Tigar has been one of the most reliable hitters in Montclair State University’s lineup. The infielder is batting an impressive .409 with two home runs and 35 RBIs, while also posting a staggering 1.050 OPS. His steady approach and ability to deliver in key moments have made him a constant presence at the top of the order.

Tigar’s numbers tell the story, but his consistency might stand out even more. He has recorded a hit in every game this season, aside from two, demonstrating his ability to adjust to different pitchers and situations. His 31-game hit streak spanning two seasons ended in early April. But game after game, he finds ways to get on base, extend innings, and create scoring opportunities.
Tigar leads the team in three different categories: batting average, hits and RBIs, further highlighting how much of an impact he has had on Montclair’s offense. Whether it’s driving in runs or setting the tone early, Tigar continues to be a player the Red Hawks rely on every time he steps into the box.
Despite his consistently strong offensive production, Tigar credits his team with his success.

“My teammates are always putting me in a good spot,” said Billy Tigar of his scalding hot season. “I feel like I am always coming up and somebody’s on base. I give the credit to all my teammates.” Photo courtesy of Montclair State Athletics

Even in moments where the production dips, Tigar’s presence remains steady. In Montclair State’s recent 16-14 loss to William Paterson, he went 1-for-5, a rare quieter outing in what has otherwise been a highly consistent season. The loss moved the Red Hawks to 19-5 overall and 3-1 in NJAC play, but they remain firmly among the top teams in the conference.
For a hitter like Tigar, one game does little to define the bigger picture. His track record this season suggests a quick response, and Montclair State will continue to rely on his bat as the competition intensifies.
“It’s hard to fight how much of an impact Billy has been because, I mean, look at his numbers,” said head coach Dave Lorber. “He’s obviously leading us in a ton of offensive categories. He’s been versatile in what positions he can play, and always comes out with a positive attitude, willing to do whatever the team needs in the moment. So, it’s fun to see a guy like that be rewarded.”

With a rigorous NJAC slate on deck, the Red Hawks are entering one of the most important stretches of their season. Upcoming matchups carry significant weight when it comes to the conference standings, and strong offensive production will be key.
As Montclair State prepares for that challenge, Tigar remains at the center of it all. His consistency at the plate and ability to deliver in big moments give the Red Hawks a strong foundation, and if he continues to swing the bat the way he has, the team will be in a good position as the conference race heats up.
